The Rail

Filled with memorable characters, this is a work of great range and power that combines sharp cultural and psychological perception with humor. Every reader will find things to treasure. Donovan puts us in the middle of scenes that come alive with dramatic power. The Rail even helps the reader to return to one's own youth.

Tommy Donovan’s descriptive and engaging style keeps the reader riveted, rooting for him to subdue his demons and applauding his courage in overcoming his traumas. His “lights out” writing accurately portrays an historic slice of life many of us lived through in city neighborhoods after WW II. This memoir is a literary treasure trove of hope. The Rail takes place around the same time and a short bike ride from where the Ducky Boys were defending their turf in Bronx Park. And so there are quite a few shared people, places and experiences throughout, but as any Bronx kid will tell you, a few street blocks can be an entire world away. Tommy Donovan, through his unique perspective, adds a wonderful chapter to the mythology of the great, but misunderstood borough known as the Bronx.

Tommy Donovan grew up in the Amalgamated Housing near Van Cortlandt Park and attended De Witt Clinton High School in the Bronx. In the tumultuous and formative spirit of the early 60’s, he spent a few decades in nomadic pursuit of the perfect physical and personal inner geography. He finally found it in Montana, where he now lives with his life-partner, Dr. Kim Colvin, and their dog Rusty. Tommy is a psychologist currently on the faculty teaching at Montana State University.
